Three new non-executive directors have been appointed to the region’s ambulance service to add “further expertise and skills” to the Board team.

The NHS Trust Development Authority (NHS TDA) has today confirmed the appointment of Peter Kara, Valerie Morton and Dean Parker to the Board of the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust. This now completes the recruitment of the Trust’s new non-executive team.

Dr Geoffrey Harris OBE, Chair of the Trust, said, “We have been working hard to build a new Board, especially developing the non-executive team from scratch in just five months.  I am delighted that we have been able to recruit Pater, Valerie and Dean – three very experienced people who add even further expertise and skills to our Board.”

He continued: “Transforming the ambulance service is going to take time, but we are making real progress and improvements. We know that we are turning a corner - ambulance delays are reducing and compliments from patients and users are significantly up amongst other things. Added to this, we have now completed the recruitment of a new non-executive team to provide strong leadership, challenge and add increased momentum to our improvement programme.”

Valerie has spent more than 35 years in the voluntary sector holding senior positions at Help the Aged, the NSPCC and the RNIB. Valerie set up her own third sector consultancy business 15 years ago and is currently a trustee of Central YMCA and the Julia Norris Almshouse Trust. She has also been a non-executive director at Bedfordshire Heartlands Primary Care Trust, the East of England Strategic Health Authority (SHA) and Midland and East Cluster SHA. She has also been awarded the honour of Fellow of the Institute of Fundraising.

Peter is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, a director of two companies, and runs a consultancy providing financial and strategic planning to small and medium sized companies. He has had a wide range of involvement in the voluntary sector and was a non-executive director at the Milton Keynes Community NHS Trust and Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust.

He is a trustee of the Milton Keynes Community Foundation and a director of its subsidiary, MK Community Properties Limited, having served terms as chairman of both organisations.

Dean has more than 18 years professional experience and expertise in audit, audit committees, financial reporting, risk management and corporate governance.  For the last five years he was a Financial Audit Director at the National Audit Office leading audits in the Department of Health including Monitor, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and the Health Protection Agency, and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.

He qualified as an accountant with the Audit Commission where he worked with a wide range of NHS and local government bodies and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

Non-executive appointments to NHS Trusts made by the NHS TDA are subject to the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.  Peter and Dean have been appointed until December 1, 2017 and are entitled to receive a remuneration of £6,157 per annum each.  Valerie Morton has been appointed from January 15, 2014 until January 14, 2018 and is entitled to receive a remuneration of £6,157 per annum.
