Medical Innovation event will present the very latest research and innovation from civilian and military healthcare professionals with a focus on improving patient outcomes during prolonged care
The popular Trauma Innovation event, now called Medical Innovation, has announced that it will broaden its focus in 2018. This October’s edition will reflect the evolution of medical capabilities and provide both civilian and military healthcare professionals with an opportunity to learn about the latest innovations in remote diagnostics, prolonged care and other pioneering innovations that improve patient outcomes.
Organised by Clarion Events – that runs the biennial DSEI show – and produced in partnership with Defence Medical Services (DMS), Medical Innovation will explore the clinical management of critically ill and injured patients from preparedness through to rehabilitation through the lens of prolonged care.
The theme of prolonged care will run throughout the two days with Medical Innovation 2018 providing an invaluable opportunity to nurture collaborative partnerships and share best medical practice across the military, humanitarian and emergency healthcare communities. The event – running at Edgbaston Stadium from 2-3 October – will help to consolidate knowledge and provide insight into the world of emerging medical technologies.
Lt Col Jonathan Francis, the implementation lead at DMS, commented: “The renaming of this event and the broadening of its focus reflects the wide scope of healthcare delivery. Medical Innovation will introduce delegates to a range of pioneering advances that aim to increase the patient’s resilience, their response to injury or illness and improve their outcome moving forwards.”
Knowledge through collaboration
Medical Innovation 2018 will offer an opportunity for military, humanitarian and emergency healthcare providers and planners to share research and experience innovations in medical practice and processes through national and international partnerships.
The conference will explore aspects of the patient and the career journey and introduce some of the research and innovation that seeks to improve outcomes for both. Expert speakers from DMS’ national and international collaborators will illustrate challenges and innovative solutions with real-life vignettes.
Day 1 will focus on preparedness and pre-hospital care from the perspective of the patient and the healthcare provider. Speakers will explore the physical, physiological and psychological innovations that may potentially improve outcome and cultivate resilience, as well as the advances in delivering high quality care in austere environments and the novel solutions being explored in resuscitation, transfusion and patient care.
Day 2 will explore innovation in the realm of advanced medical and surgical prehospital care. Keynote speaker, Professor Guang-Zhong Yang from Imperial College London, will start the day with a fascinating insight into emerging medical technologies. Other sessions will include the use of novel patient testing and advances in medical management, as well as research from defence institutions. Civilian collaborative partnerships will illustrate the innovations in damage control and resuscitation surgery, while international experts will explore how the implementation of robotics, artificial intelligence, physiological sensors and imaging can help meet the challenges of the future operational environment.
Additionally, the British Army’s Ice Maiden team, which recently became the first all-female team to cross Antarctica using muscle power alone, will also be present. They will discuss their participation in a collaborative research project that monitored their physical performance for the duration of the 62 day expedition. The potential benefits to the wider healthcare community will be presented during the conference.
